Șușca Vasile

Vasile Șușca, a talented and passionate craftsman from Săcel, Maramureș, Romania, member of the National Association of Folk Craftsmen from Sibiu, is the owner of the traditional masks workshop. Vasile makes various masks, which are then sold all over the world. He had buyers even from Japan or Alaska. He started with tailoring and attended a vocational school in Mureș, Romania but he first learned tailoring with his father since the age of 12-13 years. He used to make furs, coats, jackets, overcoats, leather clothes and full suits.
Mister Vasile Șușca is passionate about painting and figurative ceramics and always he did everything he liked with great love and diligence. He started making masks at the recommendation of the former director of the Popular Art School from Sighetu Marmației, who showed him some works and told him that he could use the remaining materials from tailoring to make masks.
Vasile works at home workshop and procures the raw material from a neighbor who owns around 300 sheep. He processes the remaining wool it at a furrier who takes care of it. He receives many orders for masks and is being visited by tourists from Romania and abroad. In 2019 he was visited by a group of tourists from China. Vasile passed on his passion for making masks to his children who learned this craft from him. The master Vasile Șușca create folk art objects of great cultural value. The craft is almost lost, but Vasile Șușca continues to take it further through the skill with which he works.
